Client: VIN Scanner app

Ground-breaking decoding technology for Android and iOS

Working on car lots, tow truck routes, and busy vehicle fleets means dealing with complex automotive barcodes day in and day out. Could a camera-equipped smart phone accurately scan and capture VIN barcodes? How would the harsh conditions such as windshield glare or rough surfaces interfere?

Challenge

Conventional barcode scanners didn’t live up to their claims of being able to handle VIN decoding. Scanning a barcode off a bottle of wine in a brightly lit store is leagues apart from dealing with the glare, rough textures, dirt, and sunlight that are par for the course on a VIN.

Solution

Pixo met these challenges head on by scouring academic research for theoretical concepts that would eventually lead to a new approach for decoding VINs. The resulting app — available for both the Android and iOS platforms — allows busy professionals to capture 1D and 2D automobile VIN barcodes with their camera phones and share that identification via an e-mail. The apps rely on the same code library for processing the VINs, speeding up our dual-platform development and update cycles. The code (the SDK) is being adopted by organizations across the country to scan VIN numbers into their automotive-focused apps.
